BRK otherwise known as PTK6, is a protein-tyrosine kinase. It is a cytoplasmic nonreceptor protein-kinase that seems to function as an intracellular signal transducer in epithelial tissues. Upregulation of this gene in mammary epithelium causes sensitization to epidermal growth factor (EGF) and results in a partially transformed phenotype. Upregulation of this gene has been found in some breast cancers, while mutation in this gene have been found in skin, ovairan, and gastric tumours.
